Life as a MHK-UK Kitchen Retailer

June 2021: Whilst there’s a choice of ‘buying groups’ available to the independent UK kitchen retailer, the extent of business support offered by MHK-UK enables new showroom start-ups to ‘hit the ground running,’ being supported not only with a wide range of high quality product with favourable credit terms, but also, invaluable business advice, planning and marketing support.

Torben Schmid, of Cornwall based Torben Schmid Kitchens, gives credence to MHK-UK’s marketing claims, perfectly illustrating the level of support that’s available to both new and established kitchen showrooms.

40 year old Torben and his wife Debbie had both worked for local kitchen and bathroom showrooms prior to recognising a niche within their area for a high quality mid-market kitchen supplier and installer.

"Our aim was to offer furniture, appliances and accessories at a mid-market price point, but at a quality significantly better than that offered by many of the usual High Street brands and ‘retail sheds,’ with flexible levels of service spanning ‘supply only’ all the way through to a complete project managed turn - key solution. My wife’s accountancy, HR and health & safety background complements my kitchen design and project management experience and our Chapel Town, Newquay showroom location enables us to effectively service a large geographic area with a great business potential.

We got the keys to our 100 square metre showroom in early November 2020 and it was around this time that we started to talk to MHK-UK; its comparatively new UK operation was perfect timing for us. A massive plus for us was their considerable experience in dealing with start-ups and showrooms of a similar size and target market to ours. Their knowledge assisted us greatly with the development of our business plan and along with the necessary marketing tools to help us achieve our business aims and objectives. Our website and social media tools were created working closely with their specialist trade partner.

The Covid lock-down period meant that we were able to concentrate our efforts on fine tuning our business plan as well as fitting out the showroom exactly as we wanted. Even though we were not ready to actively start marketing the showroom, at that point, we were already receiving enquires and orders. I believe people could see the potential of our offering - just by walking past the partially completed showroom. This gave us great confidence in the product we had selected.

What makes MHK-UK especially different is that they understand that great product is of as equal importance as good cash-flow and keeping a tight rein on overheads. With this in mind, they’re able to supply a wide range of high quality product, with great credit terms from day one.

Furthermore, their logistics trade partner can deliver directly to our customers eliminating the need for us to retain a costly storage facility.

Since opening our doors on the 12th April, enquiry levels have been very strong. We’re not only receiving orders for projects up to £25K,  our intended market, but also, a few orders for £50K and above!"

The MHK-UK’s showroom displays include kitchens from Bauformat and Burger. With appliances from Miele, AEG and Caple as well as accessories from the Lightworks, Berghoff Worldwide and the Radiator Company

January 2020: MHK will return to kbb Birmingham this year to showcase its unrivalled benefits and first-class services for independent retailers. The interactive stand (M105) will demonstrate MHK’s commitment to the UK market and 40 years of expertise as Europe’s leading buying group.
MHK invites visitors to the show to meet its UK team and learn more about the many benefits for members including: excellent buying and credit terms from the best suppliers in the industry, protected bonuses, business and marketing support and access to innovative technology such as Europe’s leading VR software.

Retailers are invited to learn more about the dynamics of MHK. The UK team – comprising of industry experts who have managed independent showrooms themselves – will be on hand to explain the benefits of becoming a member. Both pre-booked appointments and drop ins are available with Paul Wheeler (Sales Director) and David Morris (Sales Manager) who have a combined 30 years of industry experience.

Visitors to the stand can also get hands-on Europe’s leading kitchen planning software tool, CARAT. CARAT’s real time virtual reality software offers kitchen consultants the ability to virtually immerse customers in the planning process.

Thanks to this new technology, a kitchen retailer can show its customers a VR scene in real time, allowing them to walk through their newly designed kitchen. As soon as the kitchen design is completed, at the touch of a button CARAT’s software will transform the design into VR, which can then be viewed by the customer through the Virtual Reality Headset.
 
This technology is a first in the industry. Having this service at your fingertips means that no momentum will get lost during the buying decision process.

In addition to unrivalled buying terms for retailers, MHK UK supports its members with an extensive range of services. These include marketing, digital support (such as SEO and retailer website development), business management and kitchen specialist planning software from CARAT. At this point, I could tell stories of seeing weeds growing out of beautiful granite planters by the front door, or those same pots being used as somewhere to assemble an extensive collection of cigarette butts, or even a retailer with a huge hole outside his showroom where his cellar door was broken, forcing potential customers to take their lives in their hands, and wondering why his sales had declined. I like to think that if you are reading this, you already care about your showroom and ensure it I presented in the best way, and are more interested in what tools exist to make sure it stays looking that way.
